Networks come in all shapes and forms but they have one thing in common: We all need them to lead a happy, successful life.

While many networks grow organically (think friends, family) networking, particularly in professional settings, is a skill that can be practiced.

As a starting point, here are three simple truths about networking:

  1. Networking is a long-term effort that requires more than chatting on a conference. The connections you establish need to be developed, nurtured and reciprocal.
  2. Networking can make your life easier: People who do it well, tend to have more successful careers, better salaries, and higher job satisfaction.
  3. Networking is a game you have to play. And as any game that can be fun. Don’t think of it as awkward small talk. Think of it as building meaningful connections and friendships.
